ABOUT

Drop Anchor Newfoundlands occasionally will have AKC Registered Puppies For Sale in Central PA.  As breeders we believe Quality Pups from a Reputable Breeder come with Patience and Planning. We take a long time to look at pedigrees, health clearances and structure between sire and dam to make sure we are doing what we can to produce even better offspring, that meet the official breed standard. With that said God, Mother Nature and inherited genes decide the color, gender, coat length etc of the pups so if you’re wanting a mail-order-pup made to you’re specifications right away then you’re not really concerned with getting a Quality Pup from a Reputable Breeder. If you are willing to wait for a puppy that matches you and your family’s lifestyle, then read further to learn about our breeding program and the raising of our babies.

Background: What made me first fall in love with the Newfoundland was their sweetness of temperament, which is their #1 trait and the hallmark of the breed. Knowing I wanted to show and one day breed this gorgeous creature I started the hunt for a reputable breeder and mentor to acquire my foundation bitch and guide me down the right path. She had everything I was searching for with an undeniable lineage of incredible health clearances, longevity and newfies that have the classical beauty of the True Breed Standard.

Born and Raised:  Our babies are born and raised right in our home along side us. We have a private whelping room for just momma and pups where they will spend the first few weeks where I sleep right beside them at all times. Once older they have a covered, fenced in area that will be their daytime play area until they are big enough to safely enjoy their private fenced yard with all sorts of fun obstacles for brain development. They are also given “supervised” free run inside our home and introduced to crates inside for their meals and safe rest time. ALL of these areas are monitored and recorded by 24 hour surveillance cameras as well.

Socialization: Pups are introduced and socialized together and individually to several new sounds, smells, people, dogs, cats and places. From a few weeks of age they also begin to have a variety of interactive toys for mental stimulation and physical play as well as experiencing the several different play areas we have. When older they become introduced to basic commands, crate training, leash walking, car rides and all grooming equipment. We also take them together and individually to several places outside of the home such as Lowe’s and Home Depot where the floors are concrete (as germs can’t survive as long compared to grassy dirt areas such as parks). Pups will stay with us until 12 weeks of age so that they will also have the much needed interactions with momma and siblings that they would otherwise miss out on if they left too early.

Medical: Pups go through routine deworming and we follow Dr. Jeans Dodds’ Protocol for vaccinations which is solely distemper/parvo started at 9 weeks of age as mothers immunity protects them before this. They are also vet checked, microchipped, DNA collected and hearts checked from a Board Certified Cardiologist after 10 weeks of age, all before leaving us.

Nutrition: At 3 weeks of age we begin to introduce raw food to the pups along side moms milk until weaned. Later we also introduce kibble and our custom supplement blend that we believe provides the best nutritional needs for the growing Newfoundland. We also provide RAW (not cooked!) meaty bones every now and then for pups to enjoy. A supply list is given to all of our approved, deposit down, homes ahead of time so that you can order and have ready and waiting.

Picking Puppy: When it comes to which puppy will be yours we will pick the puppy for you based off our long time experience. We will determine what we feel is the best puppy for what you and your families lifestyle and activity levels are and what you are looking to do with your Newfoundland. We watch the puppies as they grow and mature to see their individual personalities and do our best to match the right pup to each family so that not only is the puppy happy but also you and your family. We will take into consideration your preference on gender and color. At the appropriate time you are welcome to visit our home to meet mom and puppies (and dad if available on premises). Puppies do not leave here until 12 weeks of age and after they have had their routine deworming, vaccination, microchip, DNA collection and puppy heart evaluation by a Board Certified Cardiologist.

Colors: Recognized AKC standard for colors in US are Black, Brown, Gray and Landseer. We however only breed for Black and Brown. We don’t charge different amounts based on coloring, sex, companion pet vs show dog, or limited registration vs full registration. Beware of breeders that are charging more for inappropriate “rare colors” along with gender, show etc.

Safety: We will not sell a puppy to homes with invisible fencing. Not only can a full grown newf go right through the fence into harms way but even if they respected their own boundaries that does not stop a predator from coming into the yard and attacking the newf, another dog coming in to mate or someone walking right in and stealing the newf. A securely fenced in area is a must for this newf to have a safe place to potty and exercise.

Flying: We will not fly a pup unless it is able to ride in the cabin and accompanied by you.

Health Clearances: Health is one of our top priorities and something we take very seriously. Health tested does not mean “health cleared”! Not only are our breeding dogs health cleared for the numerous defects that plague this wonderful breed but also most of their ancestors as well! The more clearances within a pedigree the better chances one has of having healthy puppies. A phenomenal source to check breeders’ dogs and their clearances is the world wide Newfoundland Dog Database. I highly recommend going to this site and signing up for a free account to check it out.  Click on their HELP button if you need further help with understanding the clearances.

Cystinuria: The newfs are going to be either, clear/normal (by DNA or bp clear- which means both parents are clear), a carrier (carrying the disease) or affected (has the disease). If result is blank you must look further into this to see if the testing was done!

Heart: It is extremely important to have heart evaluations performed by a Board Certified Cardiologist. Newfs cannot be considered officially certified as clear until 12 mos of age. If the result was done by a Board Certified Cardiologist in the USA it should be listed as: advanced normal-ausc, advanced normal-echo or normal-cardiologist (depending on evolutionary year). Any other result, i.e. normal-practitioner, was most likely not performed by a cardiologist therefor the practitioner (vet) was working outside of their scope of practice and abnormalities could be easily missed. Other results may need to be translated if a pedigree includes foreign ancestors but regardless a result should be listed!

Hips and Elbows: They are normally always done at the same time (at least for the past 20+ years) so if you see one but not the other chances are one of those didn’t pass and the breeder elected NOT to disclose it which in our opinion shows dishonesty on the breeders part. Passing hip results are Excellent, Good, Fair, Normal, OVC Normal. Other results are different severity of hip dysplasia. PennHip can also be an excellent tool (expensive) but you must understand how to read the results as one can easily be tricked! Elbows is clearly Normal or Abnormal (dysplasia). In the USA hips/elbows cannot be certified officially until 24 mos of age or older.

Patellas: This is a very simple and easy test for the regular veterinarian after Newf is 12 mos of age. It will say Normal (clear of patellas issue) or have a grade (having patella issue).

Eyes: After 12 mos of age an eye test can be completed by a Board Certified Ophthalmologist. Some areas are hard to get in to see one.

Appearance: If you are considering welcoming a newf into your heart and home remember they are a Giant breed dog so they will be big when fully grown. A female (bitch) stands approximately 26in at the withers weighing about 100-120 lbs and a male (dog) stands approximately 28in at the withers weighing about 130-150lbs. Not all newfs fit this exact mold though and it is best to keep your newf at the proper weight for their individual structure. They’re not text book so these are approximate weight and heights but it is best to keep this giant breed dog on the lean side for the first 3 years while bones and joints are growing. They will grow to be big boned, deep bodied and have a powerful, muscular structure. Newfs are a heavy double coated dog that will blow their coat at least twice a year or with changing seasons so this requires weekly brushing to keep undercoat and longer furnishings from matting. Trimming will also need to be a regular duty to maintain their ears and feet as well as ear cleanings, nail trimming and teeth brushing. All of which will not only help the appearance of the newf but will also help with the overall health of the newf. If you don’t want to do regular grooming on your dog DON’T GET A NEWF.

History: Where these amazing dogs originated from is not exactly known but some speculate they were a cross between the black wolves and the dogs brought to Newfoundland on Viking ships. Others say they came from Europe to Newfoundland by early explorers and settlers and another theory is they were developed by Newfoundlands indigenous people. Regardless of where they came from or how they got here, the newf has made their place in history with many newfs being owned by famous people such as the Norse explorer Leif Erikson and another owned by explorers Lewis and Clark. Napoleon himself owned a newf who saved him after he had fallen overboard his ship and Admiral Lord Nelson kept his newf with him even in battle. The colonist Samuel Adams owned a newf as did Sir Edwin Landseer for which the Landseer color of a newfie was named for. He had painted many famous paintings of Landseers. Even Nana in Peter Pan written by James Barrie was mirrored after his own newf. More newfs were owned by famous people such as Humphrey Bogart, Bing Crosby, Robert Kennedy and Lord Byron who wrote the famous poem “Epitaph for a Dog” after his own Newfoundland. Four newfs even made their way to the white house along side Presidents Buchanan, Grant, Hayes and Garfield.

Breed Abilities: The Newfoundland is much more than just a  famous companion dog though. They were bred to be a working dog to help on land and water for which they are at home on both. In water the newf is used as a life saving water rescue dog saving humans from drowning by pulling them onto shore to safety. They also have the ability to tow boats and fishing nets to shore to help fisherman with their daily workload. And on land they’re used for drafting or cart pulling which can be utilized on farms to help with work load. But today newfs are being used so much more for things such as Therapy Dog, tracking, guide dog and they are excelling in events such as agility and conformation. No matter what your hobbies, activities or lifestyles are your newf is sure to fit right in and enjoy the bonding experience you two will share while working together. So if all of this sounds like the perfect breed of dog for you and your lifestyle and you have made the decision to welcome a newf into your home then you won’t regret it. You will be hooked on the Newfoundland breed once you own one and experience the love and bond between human and dog that’s hard to find with another breed.

Moving Forward: If you are liking what you’re reading and seeing so far, then please fill out our puppy questionnaire/application completely and thoroughly from this site. We will only respond to the emails that are accompanied with the completed application as we don’t have the time to respond to emails asking questions such as What do you have available? Because even if we have a Newf available it may not be the right match for your family but we won’t know that without the answers from the application. Our approved puppy homes for that litter will get updated with weekly pictures and videos so that they can watch their puppies’ developments.
